High-temperature resistant rubber products can maintain normal physical and mechanical properties and good performance for a long time when used under high-temperature conditions. The heat resistance of rubber products mainly depends on the type of rubber, with common ones including EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene rubber) E5LYY71, butyl rubber, nitrile rubber, and neoprene rubber. As a mainstream material in the market for reducing the cost of rubber products, can recycled rubber be used in the production of heat-resistant rubber products? Which types of recycled rubber can be used to produce heat-resistant rubber products?
1. EPDM Recycled Rubber
EPDM recycled rubber is processed from EPDM scrap from the extruder, unvulcanized EPDM, or waste EPDM products such as EPDM sealing strips. It retains the basic performance characteristics of EPDM rubber, featuring good high and low temperature resistance, aging resistance, and weather resistance. It can be used alone or mixed with EPDM rubber to produce heat-resistant rubber products such as heat-resistant hoses, effectively reducing raw material costs.
2. Nitrile Recycled Rubber
Nitrile recycled rubber is made from nitrile rubber scrap, waste nitrile gloves, or oil seals through crushing, desulfurization, filtration, and refining. It has good oil resistance and heat resistance and can replace part of the nitrile rubber in the production of heat-resistant rubber products, reducing costs. The heat resistance of nitrile recycled rubber increases with the acrylonitrile content, but excessive content may cause thermal crosslinking, leading to deteriorated physical and mechanical properties. Medium acrylonitrile content nitrile rubber is commonly used with nitrile recycled rubber to produce heat-resistant rubber products.
3. Butyl Recycled Rubber
The main raw material for butyl recycled rubber is waste butyl inner tubes. It retains the good air tightness, heat resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance of butyl rubber. It can be used alone or blended with butyl rubber or EPDM to produce heat-resistant rubber products, lowering costs while saving electricity. Butyl recycled rubber vulcanized with phenolic resin has better heat resistance, and that vulcanized with p-quinone dioxime outperforms sulfur vulcanized systems in heat resistance.
Recycled rubber can be used alone or in combination with suitable types of synthetic rubber in the production of heat-resistant rubber products, effectively reducing raw material costs and production energy consumption while ensuring the heat resistance of the products. When producing heat-resistant rubber products with recycled rubber, the type and amount of additives used in the vulcanization system, reinforcing filler system, anti-aging system, and softening/plasticizing system in the rubber formulation will also affect the heat resistance of the compound, which will be discussed with you later.
